How does the CEB/Gartner Mechanical Comprehension Test work?

The CEB/Gartner Mechanical Comprehension test is an assessment used for job candidate applying to entry- and mid-level positions that require mechanical reasoning skills.

It is used to measure the ability to understand mechanical concepts and provides an indication of how a potential employee will perform when asked to perform tasks that require the general understanding of mechanical principles, such as:

  • Pullys & Leverage and Gears & Belt drives

In a mechanical aptitude Pulley & Lever test, you may be asked to differentiate whether the input torque or the output one is larger. You may be asked to establish the volume of force needed for lifting a load. You may also have to identify the course of its tilt.

Gears and Belt drives are usually designed to transmit the spherical torque to another cogwheel. In a mechanical aptitude test, you may be asked to identify the direction or the velocity of the cogwheels portrayed.

  • Rotation of shapes:

Rotation of shapes is directed away from the axis of rotation that appears to act on all objects when viewed in a rotating frame of reference.

  • Fluid hydraulics

This test is designed to assess your ability deal with the mechanical properties of liquids. It can be used for the generation, control, and transmission of power by the use of pressurized liquids.

  • Volume/Weight and balance

This test is designed to assess your ability to calculate the shape and volume of common figures. By practicing you will be prepared for the real assessment.

  • Temperature and Pressure

This test is designed to assess your ability to measure your knowledge regard to temperature and its effect.

Well-known Mechanical Comprehension tests

There are several mechanical comprehension tests, made by different publishers. Each of these tests has its own characteristics and uses. Well-known mechanical reasoning tests are:

Bennett Test of Mechanical ComprehensionThe Bennett Test of Mechanical Comprehension (BMCT) by TalentLens is a widely used mechanical test that requires candidates to respond to questions associated with a series of illustrations showing a particular mechanical principle in operation. The BMCT focuses on practical problem-solving skills and measures a complex set of abilities composed of three primary facets or constructs, being mechanical information, spatial visualization, and mechanical reasoning and understanding. The Bennett Mechanical test is used in a wide range of occupations, such as automotive mechanics, machine operators, aircraft/ship mechanics, industrial/technical sales representatives and other installation, maintenance and repair fields of work. Wiesen Test of Mechanical AptitudeThe Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude (WTMA) measures mechanical aptitude and the ability to learn how to use and maintain equipment/machinery. It is designed to help predict performance for specific occupations that involve operating, maintenance, and servicing of tools, equipment, and machinery. This test is 30 minutes long and has 60 questions. The WTMA test is scored in two ways; a raw score and a percentile ranking. The raw score is a measure of many questions that are scored correctly by the candidate, and the percentile ranking is a relative performance score that indicates how the candidate’s score rates about the score of other candidates who have taken the Wiesen Mechanical Test. Barron’s Test of Mechanical AptitudeBarron’s Test of Mechanical Aptitude has its origins in the armed services. It is used to measure the mechanical reasoning ability of candidate’s and is available in computerized as well as pencil and paper form. For more information click here.

Stenquist Test of Mechanical Aptitude: The Stenquist Test of Mechanical Aptitude is a slight variation from the standard mechanical comprehension aptitude tests, such as Bennett and Wiesen. The Stenquist test consists of a series of problems presented in the form of illustrations. Based on these provided illustrations candidate’s are required to determine which illustration fits in with another group of illustrations. Even though this is a different way of measuring mechanical comprehension, it still measures the same skills as the other tests.

CEB/Gartner Mechanical Comprehension TestThe CEB/Gartner Mechanical Comprehension Test is a widely-used test that is designed to assess a candidate’s ability to understand basic mechanical principles and their application to devices such as gear, levers and miscellaneous machinery. This test is used for job positions that require an understanding of mechanical principles and their application, but also the usage of equipment, hardware, and machinery. The CEB/Gartner Mechanical Comprehension Test is used in a wide range of industry sectors, such as engineering, maintenance, manufacturing, construction, and transportation. This test is 10 minutes long and has 15 questions. For more information click here.

Tips and tricks to ace your Mechanical Comprehension test

Keep in mind these effective tips and tricks when you solve the CEB/Gartner Mechanical Comprehension Tests:

  • Read the question and instructions accurately. Even though this seems logical, often candidates miss out critical information.

  • Be prepared with a pen and a piece of paper when doing the online test.
  • The most common operations you can expect during a mechanical aptitude test are:
    • Pulleys and Levers
    • Hydraulics
    • Resolution of Forces, Centrifugal Force, and Inertia
    • Structures, Planes, and Slopes
    • Gears and Belt Drives
    • Gravity and Velocity
    • Acoustics and Optics
    • Center of Gravity
    • Electricity
    • Heat
    • Shape and Volume
