The Predictive Index Learning Indicator (PI LI)

The Predictive Index Learning Indicator (PI LI), formerly known as Professional Learning Indicator (PLI), is a 12-minute test comprised of 50 questions. The PI LI is given to potential hires to test for skills not easily found on a resume or during an interview. The purpose of the PI LI assessment is to measure your cognitive ability or your capacity to learn and adapt in the workplace.

The PI LI test is used by many big organizations in their pre-employment procedure. The PI LI consists of 3 different topics, each containing its own subcategories.

Numerical Reasoning: Number series, Math Problems, Word Problems
Verbal Reasoning: Analogies, Formal Logic, Antonyms
Non-verbal Reasoning:   Spatial Awareness, Logical Reasoning, Inductive Reasoning

Number Series

In a Number Series question, you are asked to find a connection between given numbers in a sequence and choose the right number that comes next. These questions provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s general ability to logically reason with numbers.

To solve Numer Series questions efficiently, you should first check the relationship between the given numbers and see if you can find some simple arithmetic relationship. If you can't find a clear relationship between the numbers themselves, then it's possible that there are two interleaved number sequences.

The correct answer to the example question is B, 6,144. In every step, the previous number is multiplied by 4. This pattern is illustrated in the picture below:

Math Problems

In these questions, you are presented with a series of numbers or fractions, and you are to decide what the lowest number in this series is. These questions provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s general numerical aptitude.

PI LI Math Problems example question.

The correct answer to the example question is A
If we look what their value is, you see that 4/9 is the lowest value:
4/9=0.44
7/8=0.875
3/5=0.60
4/6=0.66

Word Problems

Word problem questions assess your reading comprehension skills and numerical aptitude. In these tests, you are asked to solve mathematical problems based on short texts. These questions provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s general reading comprehension skills, ability to visualize information and numerical aptitude.

You can orient yourself by making note of the information that is given throughout the problem, and label variables with what they stand for.

PI LI Word Problems example question.

The correct answer to the example question above is B, "6 hours and 40 minutes".

The total number of degrees that the temperature needs to rise is 38 – 30 = 8 degrees Celsius. 8: 1.2 = 6 2/3, thus it took 6 2/3 hours for the jacuzzi to get to the right temperature. 2/3 of an hour is 2/3 x 60 = 40 minutes, so 6 hours and 40 minutes.

Analogies

An Analogy is a word problem comprised of two different pairs of words. In the test, the word problem is set up to reveal one set of words first. This pair of words is related to each other in some way. Then the problem gives you the first word of the second pair and it is up to you to complete the second pair by choosing the second word out of the answer options. However, this second word must be related to the first word in the second pair in the same manner that the first pair of words is related to each other. In order to solve a verbal analogy, you need to find that relationship. These analogies questions are designed to measure a candidate’s ability to recognize relationships between ideas, think methodically and fluency in the English language.

The correct answer to the example question above is A, "Herald".
Explanation: Harbinger and Herald are synonyms that mean to forewarn whereas harbor and shelter are synonyms that mean to provide refuge.

Formal Logic

In these questions, you are presented with 2 or 3 assumptions and a conclusion. You are to decide if this conclusion is correct based on the assumptions. You can choose between “Correct”, “Incorrect”, and “Cannot be determined based on the information available”.

Formal Logic questions are designed to provide the employing organization with information about a candidate’s deductive and logical reasoning skills.

PI LI Formal Logic example question.

The correct answer to the example question above is A, "Correct". If all blue stones are kept and only some X stones are blue, then only some X stones are kept. Therefore, it is correct that some X stones are not kept.

Antonyms

In an Antonyms test, you must choose the correct opposite for the given word, for example, “Withdraw”.  The meaning of withdrawing is “to pull back, move away or backward”. Thus, from the given options, the word with a contrary meaning is “Advance” which means “to move forward”.

Before you have a look at the answer possibilities, try to think of antonyms for the given stem word. Also, consider secondary meanings of the stem word.

The antonym for the given word in the example question is: A, "Blameless"

Spatial Awareness

Spatial awareness questions present you with 2 figures that have something in common. Subsequently, 4 figures are given as answer possibilities, and you are to decide which figure does not have this same feature in common.

Try to look at only one aspect of a shape at a time. Look at orientation, size, and location to decode the common feature.

PI LI Spatial Awareness example question.

The correct answer to the example question above is C. The common feature in all figures is a diagonal line from the upper left to the lower right. The line in figure C is inverted.

Non-Verbal Analogies

In these questions, you are presented with an image that undergoes certain changes. Subsequently, a second image is shown that is supposed to undergo the same change and your task is to choose the right picture that underwent the same changes as the first picture.

If you’re stuck and can’t spot the change try starting at the end of the sequence and work backward. This might give you a new perspective.

Inductive Reasoning

In these tests, you will be presented a series of figures where you need to identify a pattern and select the missing figure.  To identify these patterns, you need to think logically and methodically. Once you find a pattern, try to apply it to the figures to see if it corresponds to the changes and movements shown.  Then you will be able to deduct the missing figure among the given options.

PI LI Inductive Reasoning example question.

The correct answer to the example question above is C. The following patterns can be found to solve the question.

Pattern 1: The two dots from the first image stand in the left and right column alternatingly.
Pattern 2: In the opposite column either three dots get added, or two dots are removed alternatingly.
